Réttir, Annual Sheep Roundup

Once a year, in September, farmers in Iceland will head up into the highlands to retrieve their sheep, who have been running free over the summer. After herding them back home the sheep need to be sorted and that's where the annual tradition of Réttir comes in.

In Húnaþing vestra there are seven annual sheep roundups in the following places: Valdarásrétt, Hamarsrétt, Hrútatungurétt, Miðfjarðarrétt, Víðidalstungurétt, Þverárrétt, and Hvalsárrétt. Exact dates differ from year to year but the dates are often posted on the municipality website when the time comes.
